Obituary of Samuel J. Montello

Sam passed away on September 1, 2023, from complications from cancer.   He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Montello (Winter); his parents, Anthony and Francis (Barone) Montello and his sister Johanne (Montello) Knittel.  He is survived by his sons, Christopher (Nicole) and their children, Sophia, Cara and Mia; and David and his children Alexander and Riley.

Sam was born in Rochester to Italian immigrant parents and was determined to live the life of an American boy.  He attended John Marshall high school and graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Education.  While at Geneseo he was a proud member of Delta Kappa Tau fraternity.

After college he began teaching at School #38 where he would meet and eventually marry Elizabeth Winter.  Sam became one of the youngest principals in the district when he became the leader of School #46 in the Browncroft area, later moving on to School #23 in the Park Avenue neighborhood.  After serving as a principal for many years, he went on to spend time in the district offices before retiring.  Even after retiring from the city school district, he maintained his interest in education by working with a charter school.  During Sam’s career he impacted the lives of thousands of students and teachers, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Sam was involved at Third Presbyterian Church and valued the relationships he made there.  He enjoyed traveling and socializing with his many friends and family.   To all who knew Sam he was always very active, social and fun.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Sunset House in Irondequoit who supported Sam with dignity and love in his final days.

Calling hours are 2-6pm on September 12, 2023, at Falvo Funeral Home in Webster.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Sunset House 3746 St. Paul Blvd. Rochester, NY 14617.   A memorial service will be held at Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs St. Rochester, NY at 11am on September 13, 2023.
