Sammy and I pretty much grew up together. Born to Italian-American immigrants in November 1940, Sam arrived a few days ahead of me. For that reason, he would jokingly remind me that he was my "elder" and therefore deserved my respect. In Septemb45, we both entered elementary school at #41 School in Rochester. Thereafter, we moved on to John Marshall High School, from which we graduated in June 1958. We then went our own ways, with Sam attending SUNT Geneseo while I attended the University of Rochester. Sam would enter upon a successful career as an elementary teacher and school administrator with the Rochester City School District while I would end up teaching high school and middle social studies with the Department of Defense Overseas Dependents Schools in Germany. Although we would see one another very seldom, we kept in consistent written contact.
I particularly admired Sam's perseverance. Early during his freshman year at Geneseo, his dear mother, with whom he was very close, unexpectedly passed away. Sam could easily have chosen to drop out of school, Instead, he persevered and finished his undergraduate studies,

Sam was a high school classmate and friend. When we attended our 60th reunion he surprised me with his fine educational background and obvious successes, He was witty and very easy to be with. We spoke of the good times in high school, and over the years, a good friend still.

first met Sam when I worked for an Allstate agent. A couple years later in 2014 I opened my own insurance agency. Sam happened to see it in the newspaper and called me right away to congratulate me and wish me the best of luck.
Soon after, I was at his home on Mary view Drive writing his insurance. Sam was a kind and caring person. He was also very easy to talk to and I will miss our conversations. I will miss you my friend.
Myself and my staff Kevin Sheedy & Brooke Page send our condolences to Sam's family.

Let me add to Bill Seiffert's tribute below. Sam was a Penfield Rotarian colleague who effectively was the Dance Captain of the Rotarettes in the Club's Annual Musical Productions. Sam's "dancing skills" added credibility to the show's Chorus Line. The remaining 9 dancers added shlock that provoked laughter and applause from the 6,000 attendees over seven performances each year. Sam helped the Club raise thousands of dollars each year for the Club's projects and programs.

My lasting memory of Sam is the Annual Penfield Rotary Show. He and I, along with about 10 other men (all dressed as women including beautiful costumes and wigs) were the "Chorus Line". We were chosen because we were brave, young, and handsome - and a bit slimmer than most of the other Rotarians.
Sam was without a doubt the best dancer and I was the worst. Sam told me, " watch me and listen to the music". Unfortunately I was always about 30 seconds later than Sam, his leg was high and mine was just coming up. We may not have been the best chorus line but we had a lot of fun and the audience loved it.

To the Montello Family: My last conversation with your Dad was exactly 1 yr ago when he reminded me to "go on with my life after losing my Husband because life is too short"! Who could have imagined that 1 yr. later he would be gone. Thank you neighbor, I will take your advice & miss you on your daily walks around the neighborhood. R.I.P. Angie Nalbone

I was a teacher at School 23 in the’90s when Sam was the principal. He was always easy to work with and had the best interest of the students at heart.
Sam was a fun guy and it was always nice to talk to and get together with him. My condolences to the family.

I have two strong and lasting memories of Sam.
The first is when Carol and I went to Rochester prior to Nicole's wedding with Chris. Carol kiddingly has referred to the trip as the "pre nuptial inspection tour" We met Sam and Liz for the first time and we all went to dinner at Mr Dominic's, a fabulous Italian restaurant on the lake. During dinner Sam disappeared for a bit and we discovered later that the reason for this was to allow him to get to the servers to let them know that he would be picking up the tab. It was a wonderful gesture and ever since if we do that ourselves we call it, "doing a Sammy."
Secondly, Sam was the type of person who could go to a party with 50 total strangers and in short order become their best friend. He had a great ability to talk with people and to make them feel comfortable with him. He was just a natural. He loved a party.
