One of my fondest memories of my dear cousin Cathy was her love for animals and her gentle nature in general. When we visited my Scalzo cousins in Geneva, NY, in the Summer of 1979, Cathy took us younger kids for a walk around their neighborhood. She must have been almost twenty and (I believe) was going to school nearby. I was only 17 at the time, the oldest of four kids, and not yet in college. She took us under her wing with the grace of a mother eagle and paid particular attention to my young sisters (15 & 13 years old at the time). I was grateful for that, for her going the extra mile to make them (and all of us, really) feel so welcome in beautiful upstate New York. But the memory that STILL makes me laugh today is her defiance of her dad who explicitly told her to leave "Buddy," the barrel-chested dog, behind because his health wasn't so good. I think he had congestive heart failure or something, because he struggled to breathe at times. But Cathy *KNEW* Buddy loved to be with people and to be out on a walk. So, when we left the house, she went around to the backyard and snuck him out to go with us. Afraid of what her direct violation of Uncle Dom's order would mean for Cathy, I expressed a thought that maybe we should leave him behind. "Oh no!" she said. "Buddy loves to be out. He needs to be free to run!"
That still brings a smile to my face every time I think about it.
Rest in Peace, sweet & funny lady, light for so many young minds. We will all miss you sorely.

Cathy was a wonderful friend and teacher. I loved working with her and knowing how much she cared about ALL of her students.
She will be missed by so many. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Cathy was my best friend through much of middle school and high school and I couldn't have asked for a sweeter, funnier or more fun person to hang out with, go bike riding with, or sneak out to college parties with during sleep-overs at each other's houses. As first and second singles on the varsity tennis team, we loved playing challenge matches against each other and then pouring over the newspaper to scout out our next opponents. We were excited to both be asked to join the OQ sorority and kept our vows to never divulge what the letters on our jacket stood for. In high school, when it seemed like a lot of girls could be catty and mean, Cathy was always so kind to everyone, quick to smile and laugh, and to make everyone feel welcome. When disco was king, Cathy was by far the best dancer I knew, and loved getting out on the dance floor with her friends.
Alzheimer's is a cruel disease and never crueler than when it strikes someone as young and full of life as Cathy. My heart goes out to her family and friends who surrounded her with so much love as she fought that battle for so long with her usual optimism and cheerful spirit.
Cherishing the memories of fun times together. Your friend, Katie

Cathy and I met at Cayuga Community College where we played together on the volleyball team. We shared a love for disco dancing and Cathy was an amazing dancer. We would go to her parent”s house in Geneva and her dad and mom were so welcoming. Cathy came to my wedding in Camillus and it was so special to have her there after not seeing her for many years. I pray for peace for her family. She was the best and heaven has gained an angel.
