I met Nat soon after we moved to New Canaan in 1961. Rapscallion is probably a good descriptor for Nat at that age. One winter day at his house, Nat convinced me to go out his bedroom window and onto a steep icy roof to smoke cigarettes. Another death-defying stunt was sledding down Colonial Road, across Valley and into a snowbank. Why we never got pasted by a car is a mystery to this day.
As often happens, we went our separate ways – until young Nathaniel IV passed. It was heart wrenching seeing Nat and Denise so broken and lost. I hope I was a good enough friend in those days. A few years later, at a mutual friends wedding, here came Nat and Denise, Nat proudly pushing a double stroller with Brandon and Trisha.
Rest well Nat, you were a good man.

Nat Holms was a childhood friend of mine that introduced me to numerous influences. We took long bike rides west from his home… Even as far as the remote, spooky realms of what we believed was New York state. He introduced me to smoking cigarettes, an impossible pursuit in the Brown household. Beyond 6th grade we had less and less contact. I heard bits and pieces from mutual friends and his brother Joe who played piano faithfully for my mother on many occasions. Nat’s passing is a reminder of where I stand in the progress of life and he has been in my mind these days.

Denise, Brandon, and Tricia we're so sorry for your loss. We were lucky to have Nat as a neighbor all these years. He was always friendly and had a good sense of humor. We had some fun exchanges over the fence in the warm months when we might both be out cooking. He was also generous to share his skills a few times to help us with some home maintenance - much appreciated! We'll miss him and wish we would have had taken even more time to get to know him that much better. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
