Russell Cappellino

Obituary of Russell V. Cappellino

In loving memory of Russell V. Cappellino, Rochester, NY (formerly New York City), who entered into eternal rest on March 3, 2024, at the age of 88. Russell was predeceased by his parents, Mary (Mule) and Peter Cappellino, as well as his younger brother, Cosmo “Cozzie” Cappellino. He is survived by his one and only daughter, Robin Garofolo, and proudly carried the title of “Papa Russell”, to grandchildren Phillip Garofolo (Alissa Brossmer), and Michael (Gina) Garofolo. In 2021, Russell was honored, and so very grateful, to become great-grandfather to Phillip Russell Garofolo, and their connection to each other, from day one, was unparalleled, unique, and simply magical.  Russell is also survived by his loving sister, Thonna “Dede” Stapert, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends. Last but not least, Russell also leaves behind his beloved pet, and devoted companion, Moka, who will now be cared for by Robin. Russell was a one-of-a-kind person, who touched so many lives along his path in life, in so many wonderful ways, and he will be truly missed.

Russell moved from Rochester to New York City in the 1970’s, where he led an exciting career, spanning decades, in the hair and makeup industry. He was a true New Yorker and embraced the lifestyle like no other. He worked with many lifelong clients, most of which became great friends. During this time, he had the occasion to work with many celebrities, and was a loyal supporter, and aficionado of the Performing Arts, in a city that he loved, NYC, as well as abroad.  Russell found joy in the magic of the performances, and actually had the opportunity to personally take a role in several theatrical productions.

Russell’s love for traveling, and seeking new adventures, knew no bounds. He spent much of his free time exploring the world and sharing these experiences with his family and friends. He cultivated deep and enduring friendships throughout his life, and lived his life selflessly, always ensuring that others around him had the best experience possible. Russell returned to Rochester within the last few years, to be closer to family. This offered him the opportunity to spend quality time with his loved ones, especially his great-grandson.

Though Russell may have bid farewell to this world, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.  Russell’s legacy of family connectivity, creativity, love, and joy will continue to inspire us all.

Interment held privately.  A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity that touches your heart.
