Obituary of Raymond Russo
Russo, Raymond
Rochester:
November 12, 1916 - January 1, 2014.
Raymond was the youngest son of thirteen children of Sicilian immigrants. His father, Giovanni (John) immigrated as a young adult from Palermo, Sicilia. He owned the Rochester Macaroni Factory. His mother, Giulia (Julia) came to this country as a young child from a small town outside of Palermo; Termini Imerese, Sicilia. She was known for her baking. She loved to sing opera.
Raymond worked in the CC camps during the depression. After that he served in the Army in New Guinea during WW II where he contracted many near fatal diseases. After the war he did some carpentry work, then worked for the United States Post Office. He loved the world of boxing. He was a great poker player. He loved to draw. He treasured his books and never missed the Lawrence Welk Show.
Our father was a complicated and private man. He was hard on those around him, but hardest on himself. His standards were so high that he was often disappointed. He was a true survivor, but the world was never an easy place for him. That said, he was a good person and a very generous person. He loved his family very much.
He is survived by his beloved daughters, Margot and Janice and grandson, Geoffrey, his very caring and devoted nieces Patty and Jeanie, his wonderful younger sisters, Violet and Alyce and his many other nieces, nephews, friends and his special neighbors Sue and Jose & family. He will be greatly missed by all.
