My Wife’s Aunt met Owen through the choir at St. Marys . During a conversation, she mentioned to Owen her niece married someone also with the uncommon last name Crumb. Owen gave her his phone number and asked that I call him. I did. At that point in his life, Owen had become interested in family history. I called Owen and in our first conversation, he introduced me to a book entitled Descendants of Daniel Crumb, by Clara Crumb Fiske. Never had I dreamed a book existed which could trace my family from an immigrant who came to the United States in the 1600s through to my father. His phone call and then subsequent visit sparked my interest in my own family history. Through Owen I began what was to be a very interesting and time consuming hobby, researching my family history. I touched base with him a few times over the years. His interest in genealogy had been replaced with his interest in his grandchildren but the last time he was at my house (which must have been 10-12 years ago) he expressed his pleasure in how much I enjoyed the hobby. I never would have gotten started without his assistance. Even though I may never finish the book I have started on the topic of my family, I truly find it a rewarding experience. One of the best parts of the hobby was the joy it brought my Grandparents, their siblings, and their cousins when they realized I had an interest in their lives and stories. They unburied pictures and documents from their closets, attics, and storage chests. I now have pictures of my grandparents as children, my great grandparents, but even some of my great, great grandparents. The time I spent with these elderly relatives and the memories they left me are all a result of Owen’s influence in my life. I hope he knew how much I appreciated the door he opened for me. To Mrs. Crumb and the rest of Owen’s family, please accept my condolences over your loss. Hopefully your memories of the good times will help you as you each deal with the sadness of his passing. I will miss his friendly demeanor. We played men's double tennis together for a few years and I always enjoyed out time together. We commiserated on our respective treatment of prostate cancer and hoped for a good outcome. I shall miss him.
