Obituary of Joan (Boncke) (Skalny) Kuitems
Joan Boncke Skalny Kuitems, fondly known as "JoJo," passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 86. She was an only child born on April 18, 1938, to Edward and Ethel Boncke. JoJo was preceded in death by her first husband, John R. Skalny, and her second husband, John C. Kuitems.
JoJo is survived by her loving daughter, Amy Skalny of Placida, Florida; her devoted son, Glen Skalny of Rochester, New York; three cherished grandchildren, Nicholas LaVigne (Rebecca O’Keefe), Lauren LaVigne, Lieutenant Hannah LaVigne of the US Navy; her new great granddaughter, Holly Claire O'Keefe LaVigne; and many stepchildren, step grand and step great grandchildren from the loving Kuitems family.
A graduate of Rochester General Nursing School in 1958, JoJo dedicated her life to caregiving, finding her true passion in the emergency room. Her early years were marked by her love for bowling, cards, and an occasional rounds of golf. Later in life, she discovered a love for fishing and boating, activities that brought her immense joy during her retirement.
JoJo was deeply devoted to her family and friends. She maintained lifelong connections with both her high school girlfriends, the "Rochester's Cool Kids" (RCK's), and her nursing school alumni for over 70 years. JoJo’s favorite moments were spent cooking for, hosting, or attending gatherings with her loved ones. She and her husband, John C, traveled extensively, treasuring their adventures and their time together in their later years.
JoJo will be remembered for her boundless energy, her nurturing spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her legacy of care and compassion will live on through her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Lastly, the family wishes to send a special thanks to all of the compassionate and caring staff at Cherry Ridge.
A private celebration of JoJo’s life will be held for her immediate family at White Haven cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to The School of Nursing at Roberts Wesleyan University, 2301 Westside Dr. Rochester, NY 14626, The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001, or a charity of your choice.
