Jerome J. O'Neill posted a condolence

Hello, Dr. Schlageter, aka Noel -- this is Jerome O'Neill from Monroe Class of '87. I just happened to be visiting Rochester this summer from Philadelphia, where I live now, when I heard the news about Grace. I attended the moving service but regretted that I wasn't able to stay to tell you in person how much both you and she meant to me as a student, and how I was there representing many other Monroe students of the past, including my sister Emily O'Neill, Nikki Brown, Mark Fisher, Gawain de Leeuw, and Jon Emens.
I have many fond and fun memories of your wife, who at first struck terror in me as a nervous little 7th grader in her homeroom. "You have one foot on a banana peel and one foot in the dean's office!" she liked to say. I also remember her sharing Joan Rivers jokes from The Tonight Show (I had no idea who Joan Rivers was), including the now politically incorrect (but hilarious) zinger, "Did you hear what happened when Liz Taylor got her ears pierced? Gravy ran out." (I'm sorry, that is totally tasteless, but remembering Grace saying it still makes me laugh.)
She also was my 8th grade social studies teacher and ran the amazing Humanities program with Susan, which brought us so much exposure to the arts, from GeVa to Garth Fagan to trips to the Stratford and Shaw Festivals. We didn't know how lucky we were to have the arts woven into our education, which is so rare in schools nowadays -- and probably was rare even then.
It was very moving to see your large family at the service and hear, not surprisingly, what a wonderful aunt she was. Again, I wish I could have stayed a little longer to tell you these things in person. As the years go by, I often talk to Monroe friends about how we had such a talented and caring group of adults teaching and guiding us from 7th to 12th grade.
Please know that my thoughts and condolences are with you and your family, along with those of many other Monroe alums.

I was very sorry to hear about Grace’s passing and I want to extend my deepest sympathies to Mr. Schlageter and family. Mrs. Schlageter taught my history class and she was an excellent and caring teacher. Mr. Schlageter taught my biology class and he coached the cross-country team of which I was a member in 1968 and 1969. Teachers like the Schlageters made Monroe High School the wonderful experience that it was.

I began my teaching career at Monroe in 1971 in cluster 7J. None of us had any experience and we looked to experienced staff for support. Grace was a consummate professional. She gave us all hope that we too could become great teachers. My condolences to her family and friends. She touched many lives and left us all for the better, she will be missed.

Coach I'm sure you don't remember me as I was only an average XC runner for you at Monroe from 1969 - 1971 but I remember you as a coach who coached all the athletes which made me continue to run ... also made me the excellent coach I became not just physically ( although I worked with many state level individuals and teams - even an Eastern States runner-up team in 1983) - but because my style- like yours- was to attract athletes and make them the best they could be - I often had more XC runners that the football Coach had on his team! Thank you for that! My prayers for eternal happiness for your wife and for comfort for you and the family - I see she was Catholic - I was ordained a Catholic deacon in 1989 and so shall have a Mass offered for her - I regret not being ablecto come to Rochester on Wednesday- will be with all of you in prayer and in spirit!

Grace was one of the remarkable teachers it was my privilege call colleague during my time as an English teacher and department head in the Rochester City Schools. She had charm, wit, competence, and humanity. She and Noel, another gifted teacher and administrator, were a loving couple whose friendship I valued. Grace will be missed but not forgotten by many, God bless you and grant you peace.

I am so sorry to hear this news and want to extend my deepest sympathy to Noel and the rest of the family. I had a crush on Ms. Costich in 8th grade but I was OK with her marrying Noel ( who, along with Mrs.Hawkes, was my other favorite teacher). They all instilled a love of learning in me that served me well during many educational endeavors. May all the memories of Grace be happy ones and may her name be a blessing.

We knew her as Miss Costich. She was warm, professional, and displayed her love of teaching daily. History became alive; her personal stories were endearing. What a privilege to have been at Monroe High in her class.

Dear Noel and Grace's nieces and nephew and everyone, I am so sorry for your loss. Many happy Monroe HS memories (my dad taught science with Noel). I would see Grace at the libraries and RPO concerts once in awhile. We decorated the Eastman Theatre one December for the holidays-lots of fun. There had been a bad snowstorm so I took the bus and then Grace gave me a ride back to my area, on her route home. Lots of love, Laura McCrank Viau

I enjoyed both Mr. and Mrs. Schlageter as teachers at Monroe High School. Mrs. S was very serious but fair, and elegant but unpretentious. My condolences to Mr. S. and the family.
