Obituary of Anthony Fedele Saturno

Saturno, Anthony Fedele, Ph.D. Ocean Isle Beach, NC: 85, passed away peacefully on Christmas morning, with his wife Susan and his faithful dogs by his side. Predeceased by his parents, Matilde and James Saturno, his brother-in-law Patrick Gaffney and his sister-in-law Elizabeth Saturno. He is survived by his children, James (Cindy) Saturno, Amy (Stephen) Kates, Tildy Saturno, and William (Jaime) Saturno. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dr. Olivia Kates, Hailey Kates, Tony and William Saturno, Daniel and Michael Baker, and Cenzo, David and Giancarlo Saturno. He is also survived by brothers & sisters: James (Anna) Saturno, William (Connie) Saturno, Robert Saturno, Patrick (Anne) Saturno, AnnMarie Gaffney, Carolyn (Jerry) Barnhart and many nieces, nephews and cousins along with son-in-law David Baker. Anthony graduated from the Aquinas Institute and went on to graduate with a degree in chemistry from the University of Rochester. He earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1959. He went on to teach chemistry at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. While in Tennessee he was also a consultant at Oak Ridge National Labs. He relocated to Albany, New York, where he taught at SUNY Albany as Professor of Chemistry for 30 years. He also served as Chairman of the Chemistry Department in his later career in Albany. But the highlight of his career was working for NASA, where he helped develop the original research for what would become the heat shielding for the Space Shuttle. Funeral mass will be held at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish at Church of the Annunciation, 1754 Norton Street, on Saturday, February 4th at noon.
