My Dad, Peter D'Agnolo was the "strong, silent type".
Strong - He could lift 50 pound bags of cement like nothing, and he worked very hard in all kinds of weather. At the age of 90, he put in a fence around his front yard digging the fence posts in 90 degree heat by himself. His physical strength, endurance and pain threshold amazed us.
His Mind was equally strong! He could add figures in his head that would take anyone a piece of paper and pencil, if not a calculator, to do at his speed. He had a very sharp mind for figures, facts - all things important to him.
Silent - He was a man of few words, so whenever he spoke, we children,
as well as anyone else listened, as he wasn't one for small talk. But his words were well chosen, and often he liked to use what we called proverbs such as "Time will tell." This was a useful phrase in philosophical discussions, but not so much when we wanted to know
if we could borrow the Cadillac and go out with our friends that weekend.
Dad was extremely slow to anger, as he had a very long fuse; and he was also extremely generous. As the sole breadwinner for the family, we never went without. You had to fight Dad for any check that was placed on a table. When he and Uncle Louie had their business together (Goodman Tile & Marble), they would give out Christmas bonuses to their employees - their wives; but also to us - their children. And these bonuses were a big deal as kids. We could buy our Christmas gifts with them!
Hobbies - He loved his garden and he planted tomatoes (even though he only ate them in Pasta Sauce), peppers, beans and lettuce. He liked making wine for himself and to share with friends - and he would critique that some vintages were better than others. He liked to play cards and Bingo, especially to WIN at cards and Bingo. It didn't take much to get him to go the Casino for some video Poker and the Prime Rib Buffet, but only if he could treat everyone whether he was winning or not.
Last, but not Least - Dad was FIERCELY INDEPENDENT. He struggled to make a good life for himself his last years following the death of our Mom and his declining abilities. Like the song, Dad did it "HIS WAY"!
Like Mom, I will miss him every day of my life!

This is typical Dad and Marge on any afternoon, but this time they are taking their nap Poolside at the Colonnade Club Pool on HHI, SC. I took this photo without them knowing, obviously. Love Dad in the Visor Hat and Marge under the Towel. LOL!

This is Dad teaching his Daughter, Emily, my dear friend, Guilda, and Marge how to make another dish from his Region in Italy - Risotto. We didn't have any homemade Sauce, as we are on vacation in HHI, SC - so we used Bertolli. LOL! Still - YUM!
