Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Myette

Elizabeth Myette, 10/30/28—10/14/16, died peacefully in Rochester, NY after a long illness. She is survived by her niece, Ann (James) Garczynski Altoonian; nephew, William (Ann) Garczynski; nephew, Stanley (Gina Deskins) Garczynski; two great-nieces, one great-nephew, and former brother-in-law Charles (Gail) Garczynski. She was pre-deceased by her (adoptive) parents, William and Ruth (Horrigan) Myette, and her sister Mary (Charles) Garczynski. For the first half of her life, she was known as “Betty,” and after joining the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, Sister Marie Christine. During her years in the convent, she taught elementary school pupils in the Buffalo, NY area, and was a social worker in the Charleston, SC area. She left the convent, but continued in her career as a social worker in South Carolina until her retirement. For the last half of her life, most people knew her as “Liz,” which she much preferred to “Bettty.” She was always kind and generous, and had a great sense of humor. She grew up with her adoptive parents and sister in the Binghamton, NY area. She was born Elizabeth Horrigan in Chicago to Catherine Horrigan of AuSable Forks, who was the sister of Ruth Horrigan Myette. (Betty’s father was listed as John for the sake of the birth certificate but is actually unknown.) William and Ruth took her in as an infant and raised her as their own. She graduated from Binghamton High School and worked for a time for the armed services in Washington, DC before entering the convent. She was very close to her birth mother and other relatives upstate in the Plattsburgh, NY area.
