Obituary of Susan M. Nyman

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on August 20, 2026, at the age of 73.

Susan was born and raised in the town of Lyons, New York. While attending Alfred State College, she met her beloved husband, Tom. They married in 1973 and together moved to Rochester, where they built their life and family. Her first job in Rochester was at McCurdy’s department store downtown. She went on to spend more than 40 years working at the University of Rochester, where she was known for her dedication and willingness to help others. She was especially skilled at helping international students and staff navigate official paperwork and visa processes, always taking the time to make sure they felt supported and understood.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Hazel Santelli, and her brother, Charles Santelli. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Thomas Nyman; her son, Jeff (Christine) Nyman; her daughter, Christina Nyman; her grandchildren, Caleb, Bryce, and Brayden; her siblings, Cindy Santelli, Steve (Debbie) Santelli, and Kathy (Tom) Horan; as well as many extended family members, including her uncle, Ed (Lena) Santelli, and aunt, Ceil Lester, and dear friends.

Susan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose kindness and thoughtfulness touched the lives of so many. She and Tom shared a lifetime of wonderful memories together, including many winters spent at their condo in Florida, where Susan especially enjoyed doing ceramics with the girls.

An avid reader, Susan was rarely without a book—or, in more recent years, her Kindle—in her hands. She loved curling up in her favorite chair with a good story and one of her favorite shows playing nearby.

Susan treasured time spent with her family and especially loved creating memories with her grandchildren. She was the mom and grandmother who was always ready to bake something together, plan a fun craft, or find another special way to spend time with those she loved.

Susan was deeply loved and will be missed by so many. Her family will forever cherish the memories they made with her and the love, kindness, and thoughtfulness she gave so freely throughout her life.

Calling hours for Susan will be held on Wednesday, August 26, from 4:00–6:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., both at Falvo Funeral Home, 1295 Fairport Nine Mile Point Rd., Webster, NY 14580. Interment will be held at South Lyons Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susan’s memory to the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.
