Obituary of Stavros M. Zahos
Stavros “Steve” M. Zahos
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of their loving father and grandfather, affectionately known as “Papou.” Stavros passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, surrounded by his daughters. Stavros was born on May 25, 1930, in Drosopigi, Florina, Greece to Efrosine and Michail Zahos. At the age of 20, he left Greece in pursuit of a better life and future. Greece was always home to Stavros, but he was immensely proud to live in America and to become a citizen.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was deeply dedicated to his work. He approached every chapter of life with resilience, perseverance, and pride. Arriving in America with very little, he built a life through unwavering dedication and an unshakable work ethic, always striving to provide for his family and create a better future for those he loved. He faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and without complaint, even during difficult times. Stavros had a lifelong love for dancing and was always happiest out on the dance floor. One of his proudest moments was being invited to teach at the Arthur Murray School of Dance, where he enjoyed sharing that passion with others. Known for his beautiful smile, welcoming heart, and unconditional love, he was cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A devoted family man, Stavros cherished his loved ones above all else. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He would often joke, “My car drove itself to the coffee house.” Stavros will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the loving words he shared so freely: “Thank you, honey,” and “I love you.” Whenever asked how he was feeling, his response was always, “Oh man, I feel so good.” Those words, along with his joyful spirit, will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
Stavros was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose Ann; his brother, Christos M. Zahos (Irene); and his nephew, Pantelis Vasdekis. He is survived by his three loving daughters, Cyndi (Jo Anne), Elena Knapp, and Stephanie (Joseph) Mastrella; his eight cherished grandchildren, Agora, Victoria, Stergios, Rocco, Desirae, Stavros, Alexandria, and Amarrae; 6 great- grandchildren; his sisters, Eugenia (Konstantino) Vasdekis and Eleni Vergopoulos; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Calling hours to honor Stavros will be held in Webster at Falvo Funeral Home, 1295 Fairport Nine Mile Point Road, on Wednesday, June 3, from 4:00-8:00 PM. Trisagion services will begin at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 960 East Avenue, Rochester, on Thursday, June 4, at 10:00 AM, with interment immediately following at White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the dedicated home care aides, Alyssa, Kim, and Mary, for their compassion and loving support over the past two years. They are forever grateful for the outstanding care from Dr. Emelie, as well as the continued support and assistance from Rochester Calkins VA Clinic.
