Obituary of John F. Murray

Webster- John F. Murray, 78, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. 

John was born in Syracuse, New York on August 21, 1947 to the late John K. Murray and Marjorie Murray. He was the beloved husband of Sharon for over 57 years, and together they raised two children.

John was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and attended the State University of New York at Oswego where he earned his B.S., M.S., and C.A.S. degrees. He was a member of Delta Kappa Kappa Fraternity and played college golf.

John began his career in education teaching fifth grade in East Syracuse-Minoa where he was also the varsity golf coach. John finished his career as principal of John Kennedy Elementary School in Batavia, New York. Throughout his career, he enjoyed working with so many dedicated, skilled, and caring teachers and staff. 

While in Batavia, John was a member of the Rotary Club, a board member of the Children’s Home of Genesee County, and a former president of the Batavia Lions Club. 

John was an avid golfer, fisherman, and artist. He loved spending time with family and friends and especially enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events.

He is survived by his beloved wife Sharon, his children, Timothy (Tracy) Murray, and MacKenzie (Casey) van Harssel, his grandchildren, Madison and Morgan Murray, and Ava, Emerson, and Andrew van Harssel. He is also survived by his sister, Joan LaVergne of Syracuse, New York.

Calling hours will be held at Falvo Funeral Home 1295 Fairport Nine Mile Point Road, Webster, New York 14580, on Sunday, June 7, 2026 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center. Family will gather for a private graveside service at a later date.
