Sam began his career by serving in the military, then as a Deputy Sheriff and Detective in Pima County, Arizona. He continued policing with the Redmond Police Department in Redmond, WA. During this time, Sam completed his bachelor’s degree (Western Washington University) and a master’s degree (University of Washington).

Then Sam was recruited by the National Research Council, a branch of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, during which time he was awarded a Ph.D. by George Mason University.
Sam began a second career in higher education by accepting a professorship at Rochester Institute of Technology. A tenured professor, Sam’s focus was crime and technology research, the basis of his published books. He always wanted his students to learn to think critically.
