Mr. Kastrinos was my drama teacher and director in several plays at CHS. I learned from him my love of theater and also of being a mentor.
As a teen with little self-esteem who was ridiculed by the cruel ones, the attention and interest and praise shown to me by the masterly "K" had a decisive influence on me, giving me confidence and pride and hope that I could be like the other kids. This started when he cast me in 1992 as Judge Hawthorne in The Crucible, which I recall him saying was his fave play.
To this day, when I think of a consumate teacher and mensch, I think of Mr. Kastrinos, whose influence and kindness live in my heart as the definition of a loving teacher without prejudice for any student whatsoever.
His memory is a blessing.

As I entered my 7th grade class, I took a seat in the back of the room . There was an empty seat next to me and another student walked in and took that seat. He turned to me and said, “hi, I’m Ted”…little did I know that I just met my best friend. From that encounter, we were inseparable through junior, senior high school and college and into early adulthood. My best friend, the fellow that was the stabilizing influence in my life. I was the wild and crazy guy, Ted would reel me in and set me on the right path.
He was why I succeeded in school, why I became a teacher, why I fell in love with Broadway. The thousands of memories are constantly playing out in my mind.
There wasn’t a day that passed back in those early days that we didn’t talk. When Georgia called me last week with the news of Ted’s passing, I’ve been in a confused melancholy state. Little things that happen constantly remind me of our years together. I want to express my deepest condolences to Georgia and the entire Kastrinos family, you’re all in my prayers and thoughts. I will always fondly look back on our times together, Ted, you were always a gentleman, a kind compassionate decent guy. You were ,to me, a beacon of bright light. As the songs says, ,”thank you for being a friend”. Rest in peace my buddy….

My brother was an only child too!
I met my brother through Spectrum Players, a student organized and run production company at Hofstra University. I was fortunate to be chosen first student musical director and live pit orchestra conductor for Spectrum’s “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” directed by a young talented student director Theodore Kastrinos. Ted immediately created an atmosphere of positive energy and brought out our best performances! His belief and encouragement in me shaped my future and I wonder how many hundreds of lives Ted helped bring out their “best performance”. Maybe thousands!!!
I gained a friend who became my true brother in every sense but ancestry. I gained Georgia who is a true sister. I became “Uncle Ralph” to three true gifts to our world, Alex, George and Anastasia! Our fifty I want all to know how blessed and lucky I feel to have Ted for a mentor, theatre partner, best friend and brother forever!
We had a lot in common being only children with strong ties to first generation Americans with Greek and Italian descent. Our 57 year “family friendship” will always be here as will my buddy Ted. I am sure he is directing a choir or some angelic production with bent ear and a slight glance downward to make sure the ones he loves are loved.
Sophie and I and the boys will think of “Uncle Ted” often for every time we do I like to think he will bend that ear and glance downward and smile knowing he will always be loved.

I worked with Ted for his entire career at Commack High School. He was a brother to me; and he, his wife Georgia and his children made me a part of their family. Ted was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a talented teacher, director and friend. He will always be remembered as he made the world a better place for all those whose lives he touched. Rest in peace.
