Arriving from Sicily at age 27, with nothing but a backpack, a passport, and $3, “Sam the Garlic Man" built a monumental American life defined by his amazing work ethic, large Italian family, unyielding energy and zest for life. From working days and nights at Eastman Kodak, a day job in construction, and side job in a butcher shop to support his wife Rosaria and their four children, to sharing his later years with his second wife Rosetta, he was a man who believed in the work of his hands—evident in his legendary garlic garlands, his pristinely cultivated garden, his ability to make or fix absolutely everything, and his determination to drive his tractor well into his nineties. He was a cherished fixture at BJ’s Wholesale, Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply Company, his local church, and every holiday gathering, as well as every birth, graduation, sports events, theatre production, or cheerleading competition, no matter how far away they were. As the undeniable and venerable patriarch, Saverio proudly leaves behind a legacy of 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, who all gathered to surround him in his final days. He will be sadly missed but his legacy will live on in his family and all who knew him.
