Obituary of George Ernest Jr.

Gently passed away after a long and complex illness. He is predeceased by his parents, George and Marie (Pollner) Ernest, his beloved son, Michale D. Ernest, adored daughter Abigail C. Ernest, sister Gretchen Miller and many treasured family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie W. Ernest, son Matthew P. (Molly) Ernest, daughter Stephanie S. Ernest (Bill) Gilbert, grandson Michael D. Ernest, granddaughter Kathryn A. Ernest, granddaughter Juliana M. Capuano, sister Maria Ernest, sister Suzanne (Rich) Hamell, and niece Suzie DeGrass. He has maintained close ties with many friends over the years, and has a special love and connection to his two closest childhood friends, Robert Ridgley Schroedel and Ernest (Judy) Paviour.

George is a proud Marine Corporal serving from 1964 and honorably discharged on May 24th, 1970. At commencement he was awarded a medal recognizing his professional conduct, volunteerism, and outstanding performance throughout his enlistment.

After leaving the military he joined his father, uncle, and cousin, in running the family business, later to be named, the Manhattan Restaurant. Started in 1904 by his grandfather, Alfred C. Ernest who began his career by managing 3 branches of the Carlson Coffee Company, near East Main St. Rochester, NY. By 1909, he established his own business, the Manhattan Lunch Company. In 1926 he moved the business to 25 East Avenue and renamed it the Manhattan Restaurant. He was later joined by his two sons, and eventually his grandsons, John and George, closing in 1984.

George owned and managed a subsequent Manhattan in Penfield NY which was on operation until he retired. He took on a second and much-loved second career driving for Hoselton

He loved the outdoors and sports. An avid Bill’s fan and PY football and cheer were a passion. He enjoyed attending Juliana’s Lacross games, a talented player.  When able he attended Mike and Katies games and relished in their accomplishments through the years. George was an advanced soccer player while at Allendale and continuing through college. Later he added biking, kayaking, canoeing, and snowshoeing (very challenging) to his all-time love for fishing.

However, despite his many interests what filled his life everyday was his family, they were always first, without exception. He was a devoted father and then a proud grandfather who loved living everyday adventures through their eyes.

Rest well my sweet, our hearts are filled with love for having known you.
