Obituary of Danny H. Gebre

Daniel Himicael Gebre, affectionately known as “Danny,” passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2025 in his hometown of Rochester, NY following complications from a sudden heart attack. Born on Valentines Day (February 14) 1988, he was 37 years old.

There are people whose very presence changes the air in a room. Danny was one of them. He didn’t just walk into a space, he brought lightness, levity, joy, and awe with him every single time. Danny’s smile lived permanently on his face, making you feel like the best version of yourself just by standing next to him.

Soulmate to his wife Shai Cohen, Danny loved her with a depth and gentleness that was rare and unmistakable. When they were together, it was impossible not to feel the ease they brought each other. Together they built a life rooted in partnership, and in deep love and care.

They were months away from welcoming their first child into the world, a baby who will grow up knowing through stories, photos, and the love that surrounds them, that their dad would have been their biggest fan, and, without question, a complete sucker for them.

After graduating from Rush-Henrietta High School and Buffalo State College, Danny dedicated his energy, unwavering determination, and generous spirit to creating HAKENYA—meaning “honest and trustworthy” in Tigrinya—a recruiting company founded on the principles of honesty, sincerity, and the values of his Tegaru heritage.

He had a natural talent for connecting with others, a quality that enriched both his personal relationships and professional endeavors. Danny created a close community in Buffalo, NY and New York City, sharing an exciting life with his childhood friends who grew up to be his family.

Danny was incredibly close to his only sibling, Eden. They were each other’s best friends, confidants, and comrades-in-arms. Fiercely protective of her and her biggest champion, Danny didn’t go a single day without speaking to Eden.

He was a dedicated son, always ready to show up for his parents, and he held his community closely. He loved with his whole being. He made ordinary days feel special. He could turn a hard moment into a bearable one with a joke, a look, or a perfectly timed bit of humor. Those lucky enough to know him will remember not just what he did, but how he made them feel safe, seen, and lighter in the world.

Danny’s absence is immeasurable, but so is the love he leaves behind. That love will carry forward, in his family, his beloved wife, his friends, and in his child.

Please join the family for his calling hours on Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM ET at Falvo Funeral Home (1295 Fairport Nine Mile Pt. Road (Rte. 250), Webster, NY. A Celebration of Life will follow in White Haven Memorial Park at All Season’s Chapel (210 Marsh Road, Pittsford, NY 14534) from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM ET. Interment private.
