Obituary of Karen Battaglia Claffey

Karen Claffey

January 22, 1964 – August 2, 2025

Karen Claffey passed away on August 2, 2025. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Battaglia; her stepmother, Noreen Battaglia; and her stepfather, Michael Grandusky. She is survived by her daughter, Karlie Claffey, son-in-law Jonathan Castrechino, and her two grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Vivian Grandusky; her siblings, Richard Battaglia and Michelle Levesque; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who carry memories of her in their hearts.

Karen was a bold and outspoken woman with a deep love for nature—especially the shores of Lake Ontario, where she found peace in boating and swimming. She spent many years traveling throughout the Caribbean, embracing adventure and the beauty of the ocean. A lifelong Buffalo Bills fan, Karen rarely missed a game—cheering from the stands as a season ticket holder alongside her former husband, Dave Claffey, family, and friends.

In her earlier years, Karen played an active and loving role in the lives of her nieces and was known affectionately as “Aunt Karen.” She had a natural connection with children and a memorable presence that left an imprint on those around her. Above all, she found joy in motherhood. Karen often said to her daughter, “You are exactly what I ordered when I asked for a little girl.” Even in her final days, she spoke proudly of Karlie and expressed her love often.

Karen’s life was complex and marked by both love and struggle. While the journey was not always easy, she will be remembered for her vibrant personality, her unapologetic honesty, and the genuine moments of connection she shared along the way.

Per the family’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to a cause close to her heart—whether supporting addiction recovery or preserving the beauty of Lake Ontario that she so deeply loved:
