Chelsea brought out the best in me, as she did everyone she met—from her patients to her colleagues to her friends. She loved her family and was grateful for the people in her life.
And I'm grateful I was able to call her a close friend for three years. She had a sense of humor and wit that's hard to come by (and I know some funny people). Her perspectives were both nuanced and refreshingly honest—and funny as all get-out. I'd never have guessed I'd hold close to my heart memories of her teasing me about my procrastinating, name-dropping, or nail-biting (all of which I'm doing right now—Sorry, Chels).
I see you smiling in my mind now, telling me to get to the point, maybe. Chelsea, to summarize: you're one of the good ones. You simply cared. Perhaps sometimes too much—more than anyone I've ever known or ever will.
You'll live on—deep in our hearts and at the forefront of our minds every day. In the moments when we admire the beauty in nature and art, when we question the status quo and cheer for the underdog, and when we face adversity—fighting, whilst accepting, and loving all that this complex, beautiful world and heaven hold—the latter of which now has another angel, I'm sure of it.
Love, Your Friend, David G

To Chelsea's family, friends and co-workers,
My heart aches with sadness at this great loss.
Chelsea was my medical provider over the last couple of years. She took great care of me, which put me at ease. She was quite thorough in checking on questions I had and never failed to follow up. In addition it was a joy to be in her presence. I looked forward to seeing her.
I will miss her, and always remember her fondly. I am deeply saddened for all of us.

In loving memory of Chelsea Barone. This is my best effort to honor her passing and say goodbye. Yet words can't describe everything. But to me-- and in honor of the time we shared-- this is the shape of her life.
Chelsea was deeply loved. Her absence is keenly felt. I honor the life she lived alongside those who loved her.
Chelsea was a deeply conscientious woman. She studied nightly, even early in her career, watching provider-level seminars on her specialty. She had many fond childhood memories: a chicken named Bok-Bok, "because chickens go bok-bok," and a sheep named Baa-Baa, "because sheep go baa-baa." She was elegantly hilarious in the way she told stories. She loved without calculation.
Chelsea's favorite flower was the lily. She tended her houseplants with the same care she gave to her patients. Healing, she believed, required attention and change. She acted when others hesitated; she was gentle, insightful, an enduring listener, and humorous. If she liked you, she wanted to hear you laugh. Laughter, for her, was not escape-- it was proof of presence.
She had a fierce pride and loyalty in her family, her friends, and her Korean heritage; she was a good person to have on your side. She had a love for Korean food, particularly the simple traditional dishes like kimchi and gimbap. She believed you could judge a restaurant by the authenticity of its kimchi and gimbap, which reflected her belief that simplicity reveals truth. She trusted things that were made with care.
Her inner world was sunlit, fragrant, and alive. Bravery and minimalism were among her core values. She wasn't afraid to do hard things; she was fearless. Her possessions were simple and thoughtfully chosen. She preferred an uncluttered living space, an alphabetized spice rack, and soft boho-style decor among her beloved plants. Her taste in music reflected that same airy minimalism; she appreciated modern classical artists like Joep Beving, and practiced piano to play his pieces.
A good night for Chelsea was a clear sky, summer balm in the air, laughter, food, quiet music, and above all, freedom.
She valued freedom not as an idea but as an experience-- present in small, deliberate joys. The stillness after laughter. The clink of glass in evening light. The nearness of those she loved. Chelsea was deeply free in these ephemeral moments-- starry-eyed, her voice cracking with effervescence.
She did not believe in souls. But she had a heart-- that is what she told me. Her heart was made light by her hopeful optimism, spontaneity, and a love for serendipity. Her love and passion were vibrant, living fully in the present, freed by her pragmatic minimalism without concern for what lies beyond.
Chelsea believed in beauty, and when she saw it, she expressed her admiration without hesitation. She strove to be graceful in word and deed. Calligraphy mattered to her; she put care into writing personal notes, believing that the beauty of a message lived not only in its words but in its presentation. Communication was important to Chelsea. She cared deeply about what she said and how she said it, always trying to meet the listener on common ground. To her, clarity was a form of kindness.
Care and compassion were Chelsea's work of art. In this way, she lived an artful life. Her sense of beauty was rooted in the care taken to create, not the result. Process mattered to her sentimental heart. She valued notes, handmade or homemade gifts, and loved the idea of making Christmas cookies. When she wrote a note, she hoped it would be seen-- perceived with the same care and intention with which it was made.
Despite her love for her Korean heritage, she had a heart for Italy and Greece. She was learning Italian in her spare time and dreamed of retiring to a vineyard in Italy. Her bookshelves were lined with classics such as Shakespeare, Voltaire, scientific works, wilderness writings, Zen thought, Greek thinkers, and Enlightenment philosophers. She loved Greek myths, especially the story of Baucis and Philemon, who were two lovers who became intertwined linden and oak trees, united in life and death. She also loved the story of Persephone, which inspired her to travel to Persephone's Rock in the Mediterranean.
More than anything, Chelsea brought happiness to others because she longed for fulfillment and happiness herself. She understood that the measure of life is life itself, not what follows it. She believed in joy because she believed in reality. She stood upon joy, which she knew lay beneath her feet. She was not waiting to be saved. She had already arrived.
Let her memory rest where it bloomed--
in sunlight, salt air, and the sound of laughter.
May her cares be left among the lilies.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Chelsea was my doctor. I only knew her for a short time, but she helped save me from endless pain. She was always kind and pleasant and listened to all of my issues with genuine concern. Without her help, I'm not sure I would be able to live pain free like I do today. I know I will miss her if only for our brief interactions.

Working with her I got to learn one side of her. But my fondest memory will always be something that had nothing to do with medicine.
Rather it showed to me how varied were her talents and how much she really cared about what she did and how she showed her non-working self.
Care, concern, talent, everything
This was the tag that she attached to a bottle of wine that she gave me one Christmas. The tag meant so much more than did the wine and it will stay thumbtacked to the bulletin board above my desk. Memories are forever.

I was childhood friends with Chelsea and all I can remember was her love for animals and wildlife. Her German shepherds, ferrets and always looking for turtles and tadpoles in the pond. Many sleepovers and fun memories that felt so special growing up as another Korean Adoptee. Sending condolences to her family and friends.

We went camping on Socendaga Lake in the ADK. It was a pouring, driving rain. We had to canoe to our camp. There were 9 of us and 4 had to cross the lake in 2 canoes with part of our gear and set up a tarp. We asked Chelsea if she could do it. "Ya sure" was the answer. It was a scary, windy, driving rain but we had to go because it was gona get dark and we had to get to camp before nightfall. SHE DID IT. 4 of them...my brother....myman...my sister inlaw...and Chelsea. The rain subsided some and we all made it to camp after our usual several canoe trips abit wet but safe.
It was courageous. Chelsea was courageous.
We camped that week where we always did every year. After that I knew Chelsea was made of good, tuff stuff. She was about 16 at the time. I'll always be in awe of her.

Her grace and character in her daily interactions with patients, peers, and staff were some of her greatest qualities. She always greeted you with a smile.
