Obituary of Peter P. Romeo
Rochester - Peter P. “Pete” Romeo was called home to heaven on April 3, 2025.
Born in Rochester, NY on June 1st, 1933, to Domenico S. and Violante C. Romeo, Pete graduated from Blessed Sacrament School (1947), the Aquinas Institute (1951), and Cornell University (1956). He proudly and honorably served in the United States Army at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. Pete was a partner at SWBR Architects until his retirement in 1996. Pete served on the Aquinas Board of Trustees (1985-1994), as President of the Italian-American Community Center (2005-2006), and found his way onto countless other advisory boards during his many and storied years as a pillar of the Rochester community. He was elected to the Aquinas Institute Hall of Fame in 2017.
Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Marietta I.; his brother, Patrick S.; his son, Timothy D.; and is survived by his sons Peter J., CMSgt, USAF (Ret) (Pamela), Stephen A., LS (Carol), Christopher J., Thomas J.; daughter Lauri (Brian); son Martin J., PhD (Deborah, MD); and nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren too numerous to list.
Known for his commitment to the Catholic community, especially Blessed Sacrament Church and the Aquinas Institute, as well as his devotion to friends and family, Pete’s wit and wordsmithing were matched only by his thoughtful wisdom and guidance. He was most appropriately described by a longtime colleague as “thoughtful, selfless and generous, down-to-earth, and someone truly concerned about social inequality and the ills of poverty; someone whose life and actions have embodied the precept that ‘I am my brother’s keeper’.” As a husband and father he was steadfast and measured, always armed with humor. Pete loved to travel near and far, enjoyed the Rochester Red Wings for many decades, had a keen talent for gardening, and was an avid collector of coins in his retired years, though he never really gave up drafting building plans. His legacy of service lives on in his children and their children, and through the many charitable contributions he made as a benefactor. Simply put, Pete left this world a better place than he found it.
