Honoring the Life and Legacy of Liduvina Burgos (Doña Lidu)
My heart is deeply saddened by the passing of Liduvina, a beautiful soul who graced this world for 97 wonderful years. I first met her many years ago, but it was truly an honor and privilege to serve her when she became a participant of the Centro de Oro Senior Center.
Interestingly, my connection to her family runs deep—one of her sons, Roberto Burgos, was one of my first bosses during PRYD days, while another, Luis, was both a tremendous colleague and supporter—first as a Commissioner in the City of Rochester during Hispanic Heritage days, and later during his tenure as one of Ibero’s Director. Their “confianza” (trust) —including her daughter in law, my dear friend Sonia Burgos and other family members — in me with their beloved madrecita was truly an honor, and I will always hold that trust close to my heart.
Lilvina was a quiet yet deeply observant woman—one who carried herself with gentleness, wisdom, and grace. She had a way of noticing the little things, of being present in a room without demanding attention, yet always engaged, always taking in the moment. She loved music, going on field trips, and the many activities we shared at the center, embracing the joy and companionship that came with them.
But her greatest legacy is her family. A proud Puerto Rican woman, she and her late husband built a life here in Rochester, raising their children, who as they became adults, devoted their lives, along with their spouses, caring for her with deep love and dedication. Her family is a reflection of the kindness and strength she carried throughout her life, and they will continue to carry forward the beauty of the legacy she left behind.
Though my heart aches knowing she is no longer here, I find comfort in knowing she lived a long, full life, surrounded by the love of her family. The moments I shared one-on-one with her at the Senior Center—seeing her smile, enjoy her days, and be part of a community that cherished her and we honored her — are memories I will hold close to my heart. One moment that stands out is when she joined a trip I organized to the RMSC. I watched as she explored with childlike wonder, even sitting down to play a drum set. The joy on her face in that moment was unforgettable. That is how I will remember her—full of quiet strength, warmth, and a spirit that found joy in the simple things.
Doña Lidu, you will be deeply missed. To her children and all her family, my sincerest condolences. May you find peace in the precious memories and the love she poured into all of you. My prayers are for God’s comfort and peace.
With a grateful heart for knowing such a woman of legacy,
Raquel
