He is preceded in death by his father Oscar G. Meyer, mother Amanda Zabel Meyer, sisters Norma Meyer Reckhow (Warren), Jane A. Meyer and son James Alfred Meyer.

John is survived by his wife Marcia Mock, her three children and spouses, three grandsons, five great granddaughters and one great grandson who all loved him dearly.

John is also survived by the mother of his children Margaret Schnake Meyer, sons David J. Meyer (Tracy), Glenn A. Meyer, daughter Emily A. Bayer (Tim), grandsons Matthew D. Meyer (Rebekah), Andrew J. Meyer, Alex Reid (Colleen), Sean Reid (Hannah Mayer), Christopher Reid, granddaughter Kaitlin C. Meyer (Brad Larew), niece Ann Clarkson (Chris), nephew Bob Reckhow.

John was born in Rochester, NY to Oscar and Amanda Meyer on March 21,1928. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1946. Following High School John served in the US Army in the signal corps at Ft Meade Virginia and was discharged in 1948. He went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rochester in 1952. John moved to Buffalo NY, married Marge Schnake in 1952 and began his career at Sylvania Products where he worked for 17 years. He was a founding partner of Com Cir Tech in 1969, a high-tech printed circuit board and chemical etched component manufacturer. He left Com Cir Tech in 1974 to became a partner in Standeven, Yondt &  Meyer PC, a mechanical electrical consulting engineering firm in Williamsville, NY. He left the practice in 1982 and moved to Rochester NY to become the engineering manager at Computer Consols Ins, (Nortel). John retired from Nortel in 1993.

John was a very creative, gifted engineer. His engineering work crossed many disciplines and industries including NASA, aerospace, healthcare, cancer research, and heavy industry. During his career, he was awarded seven US patents. His patents ranged from electronics packaging, heat transfer packaging, control systems, optical systems for aerospace, X-ray diffractometer for measuring protein crystals, and acoustic designs for improving in-the-ear hearing aids.

John loved the outdoors and being in nature. This love of nature was passed on to his children and grandchildren. Hiking, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and fishing were enjoyed activities as the seasons changed.

John was a faithful member of Mountain Rise United Church of Christ.

A memorial service will be held at St Ann’s Chapel, 1500 Portland Ave, Rochester, NY on Saturday March 15 at 12 PM.

The family wishes to extend gratitude to St Ann’s Community and all the nurses, aides and caregivers in the hospice unit who cared for John over the past two years.
